Dominic Collard: Business Writer & Member of The Society of Authors

Dominic Collard is a seasoned content strategist and writer who has spent years constructing influential content for a diverse range of industry sectors. He is fervently dedicated to aiding businesses and individuals in reaching their goals through strategic content planning and execution. 

Dominic boasts an acute sense of detail and a profound understanding of audience behaviour. He is committed to producing top-tier content that resonates deeply with readers and drives results.

As a freelance content strategist and business writer, Dominic guides organisations on content strategy, technology, staffing, team management, and success metrics. However, his expertise lies in ghostwriting, where he has crafted content for senior leaders in technology, cybersecurity, and fintech. 

Covering a range of mediums, including articles, blogs, speeches, customer profiles, and case studies, and with previous roles including Head of Content, Editor, and Marketing Manager, Dominic has collaborated with esteemed global companies such as Red Hat/IBM, Oracle, Temenos, and Palo Alto Networks. 

He has also partnered with fast-growing scale-ups such as Checkout.com, Metomic, BVNK, and Thriva, and his work has been showcased in respected international publications like Forbes and the Wall St Journal. Dominic fell into a marketing role when content was emerging as a recognised marketing tool. When asked about his career choice, Dominic is clear in the role timing played, saying, “Really, my profession chose me.” He has a strong enthusiasm for quality writing, regardless of whether it’s a detailed 3,000-word whitepaper or a succinct three-word tagline. 

But aside from his ghostwriting services, Dominic also guides firms on the types of content to prioritise, technologies they should adopt, methods for effectively assembling and managing a content team, and ways to monitor success and prompt change. 

Getting to Know Dominic Collard

As a self-employed writer, Dominic Collard runs a one-person show and maintains total creative control of his endeavours. But despite his creative mind, Dominic keeps an air of pragmatism when considering his career. Indeed, when asked what his favourite part of his industry is, Dominic responded: “Right now, it’s how we can effectively navigate the opportunities and challenges of generative AI writing tools.” 

Moreover, he recognises the logistical and organisational challenges presented to all copywriters, saying that “running my own content strategy/delivery company” is the professional achievement he is most proud of.

Dominic understands the importance of flexibility and a ‘go-with-the-flow’ attitude when working in a self-employed capacity. His role “varies for different clients”, says Dominic. “Some want sales leads; others want brand awareness or more engaged employees. My clients call the shots (with a little advice from me!).” 

As a result, Dominic cannot rely purely on his solid copywriting skills. When asked about the importance of soft skills in his work, Dominic said, “When ghostwriting thought-leadership pieces, the writing is only a part of the job. How you manage your subject is crucial. Skills like encouragement, diplomacy, provocation, and listening are critical.”

Teaching and Real-World Experience

Outside of his professional ventures, Dominic acknowledges the importance and value of education and training. He astutely recognises the wealth of knowledge in his possession that he can pass on, along with the benefits training can provide those looking to further their development. 

Dominic believes that lessons learned in training courses must be paired with practical, real-world experience, for which there is little substitute. When asked about the importance of putting what you learn into practice, especially in creative pursuits such as copywriting, Dominic stated, “The only way to improve at writing is to do it.”

While Dominic has plenty to offer in terms of professional skills and experience, he is also keen to impart the importance of personal well-being and a proactive attitude when starting a writing career.  “Manage your energy”, Dominic warns. “Stress and busyness should not be badges of honour. Ultimately, they lead to substandard work. So, work hard, but also rest well.” 

Dominic reinforced this point with a nod to his favourite quote, from famed writer Aldous Huxley: “It’s dark because you are trying too hard. Lightly, child, lightly. Learn to do everything lightly.” 

He eagerly offers similarly shrewd advice to young writers trying to get their proverbial foot in the door of copywriting: “Make a start. Whatever it is. Doing something opens doors and opportunities. Sitting at your desk reading self-help books, listening to guru podcasts, and building your personal brand wastes your precious time.”
